Description
Ratu Gede — Hand-Carved Balinese Guardian Mask
Ratu Gede (“Great King/Lord”) is one of the most revered protective spirits in Balinese folk belief — a powerful guardian deity honored in temple ceremonies to ward off misfortune and safeguard the community. This hand-carved wooden mask captures his fierce, commanding presence: a glossy black lacquered face with bold white brows and flowing mustache, prominent carved fangs, and a jeweled third eye set at the brow — traditional marks of divine power and watchfulness.
The mask is crowned with an ornate gilded headpiece (gelungan) adorned with faux gemstones and mirrored inlay, and finished with a heavy gold filigree collar and thick braided red, black, and cream cord along the sides. Long natural fiber hair completes the piece, giving it the full dramatic presence it holds in temple ritual and dance-drama performances.
Each mask is individually hand-carved and hand-painted by Balinese artisans, so slight natural variation in detail, color, and expression from piece to piece — and from the photo shown — is normal and part of its handmade character.
